Pediatrician dentists specialize in treating children younger than 18 including infants and children with special needs. They treat different avenues of preventive and restorative dental health.



Pediatrician dentists earn a bachelor’s degree then a degree from an accredited four year dental school.



This would be a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) degree. Some classes include nutrition, conscious sedative, orthodontics, pediatrics medicine and dental anesthesia. They will then earn the licenses legally required for them to practice dentistry within their state. The American Association of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD) requires additional education for pediatrician dentists that takes up to three years.

These dentists have the same focus as any other dentist. The difference is they only care for children. They tend to cleaning and evaluating children’s teeth during routine check-ups every six months. It is also important to educate the child and their family on proper cleaning techniques such as for brushing and flossing their teeth. They will even suggest food choices to avoid that will help improve overall dental health. Pediatrician dentists will diagnosis any problems and treat them. There will also be times with some children that X-rays will need to be evaluated. They will look such issues as tooth decay. If tooth extractions or cavity fillings are needed they will do these procedures.

They must have a complete understanding of oral health care and dental needs that pertain to children. Knowledge of the equipment used is vital as well as determining problems and working with patients. It is also a good idea to understand behavioral, biomedical and even clinical sciences. The business aspect of pediatrician dentistry is also important to produce to a successful business. They need to know how to not only operate a business but they need to manage it as well. Knowledge that is required is marketing, human resource management, accounting, insurance and all legal aspects including recordkeeping and meeting all legal and health care practice requirements.
